Referees
Your Opportunity to support Roller Derby in one of the most crucial roles!
Women’s Flat Track Derby runs on rules defined for safety and fairness. Most importantly, these rules are laid down by the skaters.
Skating referees are part of the league and train with or beside the league to make sure we are at our best for the bout. It’s common for somebody to start refereeing because their partner is a bouting skater. That said, on bout day, there are no faces to the skaters on the track. We are impartial in our support of the sport and the application of the rules.
Within Australia, there are very few leagues where men can compete in a dedicated or mixed environment. That aside, some women have a natural affinity to being a referee more than a skater. Either way, skilled referees are critical to the flow of the game. Referee skills are different, yet on par with skater skills. Who can skate better is something best left for good natured post bout celebrations.
WIRD is constantly in the process of improving our training program to get referees “up to speed.”

Interesting in helping out but not sure about skating? As well as referees, we also need Non Skating Officials
